This project demonstrates various concepts of parametric design.  Using a single part with multiple solid bodies, generate a master sketch driving the over all aspect of the design.  The parameters will be global variables in solidworks that drive the following dimensions: 

  • box_width
  • box_height
  • box_depth
  • material_thickness
  • shelf_depth

After finishing the master multiple bodied part, save each body as a separate linked part.  Then generate a part representing a 96inch x 48inch piece of material.  Using distance mates, make a solidworks assembly of the layout.

PROJECT - SINK HYBRID SURFACE SOLID MODEL

Hybrid modeling technique starting with defined locations in space from Solidworks, NURBS surface modeling in Alias, then returned back to Solidworks.

This project demonstrates the use of hard defined points and locations in space as dictated by criteria from engineering or design management.  In this case the overall build envelope (18.0 inches by 24.0 inches) within four feature locations (drain, hot water knob, cold water knob, and faucet) that a surface model (in this case the sink) interacts with.  You will have need to have at least the following three files.

  • part file of the original dimensions of the two knobs, faucet, and drain
  • a wire file where the NURBS surface of the sink is generated
  • second solidworks part that contains the integrated surface model properly made a solid with the details of the faucet, knobs, and drain.

This project is to exercise the following concepts:

  • Use of shader materials (blinn, phong, lambert, and their derivatives).
  • Utilizing texture projections (sometimes referred to as "decals").
  • Use of layered shader networks (sometimes referred to as "mix maps".
  • Compelling compositions. 

You will be required to produce three renderings.

1. Use this provided alias project folder and produce a rendering by adjusting shaders, lights, and the render global settings.
2. A second render where you may move the camera to a different composition (you may use Alias or another software package)
3. A third render where you may move the camera to a different composition (You must use another software package, other than Alias)

All three renders together must be less than a 5MB zip file when collected together.

This project demonstrates basic use of the sheet metal toolbox available in Solidworks.  Build a simple stool similar to the work example demonstrated in class and on the below videos.  Experiment with how the standard extrusion tools can work in tandem with the sheet metal tools.  Also experiment with the standard tool library and hole fixed to include standard fasteners.

This project demonstrates uses the solidworks assembly with parts having relationships based upon parts within that assembly.  Workflows for maintaining coordinate systems with your surface model still need to be maintained for easy assembly mate conditions.   You will need to submit a zip archive of the solidworks assembly with individual part files.  With the solidworks zip file archive include two renders, one daylight shot, one nightime shot (with shader illumincance effects), in whatever render engine you desire.  Then zip archive the solidworks assets with the two renders as one final zip archive deliverable.

This project demonstrates more examples of surface solid integration.  The goal is to keep integrating the surface model into the solid model so the parametric solid modeler can retains its powerful hierarchy!  This final deliverable for this project is one set of geometry organized into a zip archive and a associated render for the project.
